Santiago is one of the largest islands in Cape Verde and is home to the country's capital, Praia. The terrain is far more mountainous than some of the flatter Easterly islands like Sal and Maio.
A new international airport was opened a few years ago on Santiago. This has made a huge difference to the level of tourism.
Property development on Santiago had initially focused around Sao Francisco Bay. The first major British development in Cape Verde, Sambala, is very close to the lovely beach at Sao Francisco Bay. Sambala is a major property development that caught the imagination of the early British investors in Cape Verde.
In the north of the island there has also been some property development around Tarrafal. Property development has also taken place around Cidade Velha on the Southern part of the island west of Praia.
As the infrastructure improves on Santiago other parts of the island will be opened up for property investment.
