Most of the land development in Cape Verde is happening near existing infrastructure.  Real estate development so far has mainly been concentrated in the island of Sal and near the town of Santa Maria.  But in recent years the pace of development on other islands has accelerated.

Sal Island is the most developed of all the tourist destinations in Cape Verde.  This is mainly due to the fact that until recently it had the only international airport in Cape Verde.  Now there are 3 other international airports on Boa Vista, Sao Vicente and Santiago.

The island of Sal has amazing beaches and is far ahead of other islands in terms of facilities for tourists. Santa Maria is now far from being a small little fishing village. Development on the Eastern side of Santa Maria is more residential whilst all the larger resorts are on the Western side of town.

Land development in Sal, Cape Verde, has been focused primarily in and around Santa Maria.  The South Western coast of Sal up to Ponta Preta is undergoing substantial development.  There has also been construction in Mudeira on the road to the airport.

The island of Sal earns its Portuguese name from its principal commodity – Salt. It was once home to the world’s largest Salt mine, Pedra do Lume, and salt is still produced in several areas of the island.

Sal is probably the oldest of all the Cape Verdean islands, owing its existence to a volcanic eruption some 50 million years ago.
