Cape Verde land will give you a high investment return. Significant recent interest in Cape Verde land from the English and Irish investors is having a real impact on prices.

Cape Verde is an exciting new investment proposition for the off-shore land investor.  The best way to describe the situation is probably to compare it to Spain 30 years ago.  The development of these islands is beginning to gather pace and therefore it represents a great opportunity for investors.

Cape Verde gained independence from Portugal in 1975.  Full democratic, multi-party elections took place for the first time in 1990, so it is only in recent years that the development of these islands has started to occur.

The key date is 1993, when the Cape Verde parliament voted to allow foreigners to have full rights of land ownership.  Since then various legislations have been passed giving substantial incentives to investors, developers and companies in a range of industries.

The main reason why the development of Cape Verde is now beginning to gather pace is due to investment in infrastructure.  In January 2005 the World Bank approved various credits for Cape Verde, for a total of approximately US$198M.  Investment has also come from the European Union.

The investment in transport infrastructure in Cape Verde is probably the most crucial factor for the land investor.

Santiago

A new international airport opened in the capital city of Praia, on the island of Santiago on 6th October 2005

Boa Vista

A new international airport is under construction on the island of BoavistaBoavista is now also beginning to move forward significantly.  There is much more development planned in and around Sal Rei and near the new international airport. The new runway has been built and the new terminal is now under construction.

Boavista has recently built its first tarmac road, as the old road passed where the new runway is. To see a picture of the new terminal click here.

Maio

Maio is also starting to move forward but the supply of land is very limited so far.

A new development agency is being set up to oversee the development of Boavista and Maio. The new body will be responsible for approving planning permission, as well as encouraging the development of infrastructure.

Sal

Most of the land development in Cape Verde is happening near existing infrastructure.  Real estate development so far has mainly been concentrated in the island of Sal and on the town of Santa Maria.  This is the most developed of all the tourist destinations, as until recently it was the island with only international airport.  It is developing very fast and land prices have seen amazing growth in recent years.

Sao Vicente

There is a new International Airport being built in Sao Vicente.  We have been advised that the building of the extended runway at San Pedro is underway.  Those who invest in Sao Vicente will have access to Mindelo which is the cultural capital of Cape Verde. Mindelo has the arts, amenities and night life that are envied throughout the country.

The development of Sao Vicente will be boosted by a new NATO base of 7,000 personnel which is to be placed on Santa Luzia, a small island to the East.  The Americans are helping with the development of the new international airport in Sao Vicente to facilitate the new military base.  A Dubai based company recently made the biggest investment in the history of Cape Verde, purchasing 1.5 million square metres of land in Sao Vicente.

Cape Verde is a stunning place, as it is a land of many worlds.  The islands all have very different characteristics but one thing that unites them is the people. The Cape Verdians are a wonderful mix of cultures and they are very friendly.

Cape Verde is definitely a place to visit, regardless of whether you are a land investor or not.
