Maio Overview  

Maio is a flat, sandy island, sandwiched between Santiago and Boa Vista, with beautiful beaches and a quiet, peaceful existence.

Maio is served by a domestic airport, and by boats from the neighbouring islands. Its close proximity to Santiago and Boa Vista makes up for the lack of an international airport.

Because of the small population, infrastructure and development have occurred here at a significantly slower pace than on some of the other islands.

A new development agency is being set up to oversee the development of Boavista and Maio. The new body will be responsible for approving planning permission, as well as encouraging the development of infrastructure.
